New Fabric Store in Derry, NH!

I am so excited. When I opened my newspaper last week, I found an advertisment for a new fabric shop in Derry. This is exciting for so many reasons. I don’t have to drive 20 minutes to buy fabric any longer! It is quality fabric. And it is a local business, I love to support local. So I went in and visited today. What a nice little shop. She has close to 400 bolts of different fabric. I was in heaven. I can now go in weekly, see what’s new and maybe find some inspiration for more handmade products. I love making things. I love new fabric and I love talking with people who love it as well.

They are also having some classes. One that I thought was great was a tote bag, not a little tote bag, with all the materials included and the time to make it for only $30! If you are in this area you HAVE to check them out.

I donated 250 BookMark Belts back in August to a book signing party in New York City for Fired to Hired by Tory Johnson. Well, here is the link to all the awesome swag that was in the bags http://womenforhire.com/be_gutsy/fired_to_hired/book_signing .

This was a Be Gutsy event. That is appropriate! The experience taught me things. First be bold! I went for it, and it is still to be said what will come of all of my hard work. Second, that I could do it, I made those bookmarks, start to finish in 2 weeks, during the summer with all 3 of my children home and I only stayed up past 11pm one night and that was only until 1am. Not too shabby. Third, think outside the box. They asked for “funky” fabric. OK I was working with florals which are pretty but not funky. I had to really stretch and I gave them half in a red with stars and half in a leopard print that I would not have picked in a million years! But now I see how much everyone LOVES those so I think it will be a staple in my line.

So now what. I have not gotten any business from that. Not an email inquiry, nothing. But I am hopeful. I didn’t put all that work into it for nothing.

And now I am working to be prepared for a craft fair in October. I am also attending a Womens networking event October 1, and could get a table and sell. Still thinking about that.

So for today it is Just Do It!

I have recently decided to “go for it”. That is for me, just put myself out there, imperfections and all. I make things. I like to make things, but I don’t always think they are “good enough”. One night an idea popped into my head. My husband was saying something about my son and what they were reading. I don’t know what it had to do with anything but the BookMark Belt was created in my head. It has gone through a few different designs but it is now ready. First time I put myself out there was a small thing. I donated 30 of my product to my MOMS club end of year banquet. Everyone loved them, and yes most of these people are friends but I actually saw someone using it at the pool and she didn’t know she would run into me!! So now I am going bigger. I just finished 250 BookMark Belts. They are going to be included in gift bags for a book release in New York City on August 6th, for the book Fired to Hired by Tory Johnson of Women for Hire. They didn’t pursue me, I found the opportunity on a list that I joined through Help A Reporter Out.com (great resource, free newsletter). So, here I am, I have accomplished something big, put a good amount of money into it and now I just wait. Wait and see what the response is.

The technology that is out there has made it so economical to market and advertise products. I have got some advice from other entrepreneurs that maybe I should wait on this opportunity because there was a short deadline. I was concerned as to whether or not I could finish in time. And their points were valid. But they didn’t come until after I had already committed. One said that many opportunities would be coming my way. I wasn’t really sure about that at the time. But now it has come true. It is absolutely incredible. First another mom on The Mom Entrepreneur Support Group has a great site livingmymoment.com. Free advertising for mom’s with businesses. Then there is mamasource.com. That is also free to advertise, it is like a referral service, businesses are listed and people can review them. Then of course is twitter and facebook. Fan pages and followers are getting to see my progress, pictures and a little more about me everyday. That could make a huge difference.

So my next steps are updating my website and more social marketing. We will see how it all comes out. Good night!

Good Morning to You!

This is what my daughter wants to hear every morning, my husband did it once and now he has to sing to her. What a creature of habit. I say I am not a morning person, or a night person or a day person, so I guess I should just live in bed. But I have definitely discovered that I can’t accomplish anything too late at night. But I still stay up staring at the TV calling it my time. Am I really doing myself any good? Probably not. So today, I am going to put myself to bed early. OK probably 10pm, but that is my goal. I want to start my day better tomorrow. Today hasn’t gone badly but I did have to jump out of bed, into the shower and down here to get everyone going. BLECK! Who wants to rush around in the morning. Not me! So, here we go moms, entrepreneurs, creators, let’s do soemthing better for ourselves today. And I have lots of new friends on facebook and twitter and linkedin. If you want to join them, I will be working to put up links on this page soon. But they all seem to have wonderful quotes. One from today is “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new” – Albert Einstein. So try something new today, even if it is just sitting with your feet up for 10 minutes. Being a Mom Entrepreneur

What does it mean? Being with the kids during the day, and working at night. Maybe, doing some work with them around, sometimes. It really means that I am taking a chance on what I love to do. I love to craft, work with my hands. And so I create. Will anyone buy it? I hope so.

Today was another rainy day in NH. So I took the kids to Build a bear. I hadn’t experienced this yet. It was quite a production. I was wondering what else she was going to tell my kids to rub that heart on LOL, if you have been there I am sure you know what I am talking about. So the kids were entertained, but nothing got done around the house. Well it is summer and that is going to happen. So tonight I go back to work. Working on a large project for donation to gift bags. Hoping this will propel my business. Not wanting to need to find a “real job”. And could I really even find one in this economy, having been out of the workforce for 12 years.

Well, that is an introduction to me, I have 3 kids and have been a stay at home mom for 12 years (shy about 2 weeks right now). I love to make things and I hope people will see that they are useful things and enjoy using them.
